Suzanne Baker Herring Hutto's Obituary
Suzanne Baker Herring Hutto, 78, died on July 15, 2025. A long-time resident of Athens, AL; she had recently moved to Huntersville, NC to live with her daughter, where she passed away peacefully at home.

Suzanne was born on February 6, 1947 in Columbus, GA, the daughter of Col. James Cleveland Herring (U.S. Army Ret.) and Lillian Shirley Baker Herring. Her parents met while both serving as Army officers during World War II. After traveling extensively in Europe with the Army following the war, the family moved to Huntsville, AL in 1955 when her father was transferred back to the U.S. Suzanne was the oldest of five children, with siblings James Cleveland Herring Jr. (1948-2013), John Roy Herring (1950-2024), David Charles Herring (born 1953), and Amy Louise Herring (born 1955).

Suzanne attended elementary, junior high, and high school in Huntsville and graduated with honors from UAH with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Mathematics. After graduating, she worked for many years as a highly respected computer scientist for several space technology firms including Intergraph, BDM, TRW, and Northrop Grumman.

Always one to keep her mind busy; she was an avid reader, gardener, quilter, and antique collector. With a soft spot for animals, she also provided a loving home to many dogs and cats over the years, as well as donated to many animal welfare and wildlife protection organizations.

She will be sorely missed by those closest to her.

She is survived by her daughter Caitlin James Hutto, son-in-law George Christopher Wells, granddaughter Vivian Celeste Wells, two siblings, and numerous nieces, nephews, and their children. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers James and John.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to animal welfare organizations in lieu of flowers.
