Wallace Ammons' Obituary
Wallace Lloyd Ammons was born in Christiansburg, VA. He was the middle child of William Clarence Ammons and Frances Kelsey Ammons. His father died when he was only 14, and young Wallace stepped up to help care for his mother and siblings, a duty he remained committed to his entire life. He grew up and attended school in Charlotte, including East Mecklenburg High School and then while working full-time, attended night classes at Charlotte College.
Wallace met his wife Ruby Hoke on a blind date in Charlotte, being introduced by mutual friends. This past June they would have celebrated 60 years of marriage. He is survived by Ruby and his four children; Janice Keziah (Jeffery), Susan Wyatt, David Ammons and Valerie Dawydiak (Walter). He also has 4 surviving grandchildren; Kelsey Ammons, James Keziah, Callie Wyatt and Ruby Dawydiak. He was pre-deceased by his parents, sister Ruth, brother William and grandson Joshua.
Wallace had a long career in the textile industry, working for American Hoechst for 15 years and several smaller companies. Later, he started his own business, buying and selling textile equipment, and as a consultant and provider of valuable expertise in the dyeing and finishing of textiles. He was a long-time and honored member of the American Association of Textile Colorists and Chemists and took great pleasure in serving on their scholarship committee for many years.
Wallace was an avid golfer. He was a founding member at Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte where he also served as treasurer on the board for many years. He loved playing there with his regular Saturday foursome, a group that lasted over 20 years. He also enjoyed golf at many other clubs, including Grassy Creek Country Club in Spruce Pine, NC where he played in the annual Rhododendron Tournament, only missing once in 35 years. He also played in the annual Liars, Dyers and Peddlers tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC, with his lifelong colleagues and friends from the textile industry, and in the World Amateur Handicap Championship 3 times. He played Pebble Beach and Spyglass, and finally in 2010, he took a trip to St. Andrews in Scotland, and enjoyed it tremendously.
Wallace was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Charlotte for 52 years. His love of God and his family was evident throughout his life. He was fiercely loyal to his wife and children and made countless sacrifices throughout his life for them and other members of his family. He had friends from all over and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He loved playing and listening to music, particularly bluegrass, and spent many evenings during his younger years playing his banjo for his family.
Wallace was a wonderful husband and father and his passing has created a void in our lives that cannot be filled. We know he is watching over us still, and protecting his precious family from above. There is great comfort in the knowledge that we will one day be together again in God’s kingdom of heaven.
A memorial service will be held August 1, 2020 at 10am. It will be held outdoors at Christ United Methodist Church, 8020 Belhaven Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28216. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: The Joshua Fund, c/o Christ United Methodist Church at the above listed address.
