Wilburn "Wib" Overcash's Obituary
Wilburn Riley "Wib" Overcash, 95, of Cornelius went to be with the Lord on April 13, 2022. He was born on October 15, 1926 in Mecklenburg County to the late Lee and Mary Overcash.
Wib grew up in the Nevin Community and was a graduate of Derita High School. As a youth he was a member of Nevin Presbyterian Church. Finishing high school he joined the U.S. Navy and served in WWII in Asia aboard the aircraft carrier Steamerbay. After an honorable discharge, he and his brother acquired their father’s trucking company and were contract carriers for Grinnell Corporation. In 1948 he married Jean “Jeannie” and they remained united for 59 years, until her passing in 2007.
After an accident in 1971, Wib could no longer drive a truck and went back to school at CPCC. He became Traffic Manager for Reeves Brothers in Cornelius and was a past President of the Charlotte Traffic Club. He was also a Mason, Shriner, and member of the Travelling Tarheels.
Faith was first and foremost in Wib’s life. He was a faithful member of Bethel Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir. He also loved spending time with his family and friends, and traveling any chance he got. His family was his pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jean Overcash and one grandson, Joshua Hillman.
Survivors include his son Larry and wife Barbara of Charlotte; daughters, Susie Hillman and husband Mike of Huntersville, and Ginger Lawing and husband Gaither of Charlotte; sister, Mildred (Sissie) Parnell of Charlotte; 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 2 PM Saturday, April 16 at Bethel Presbyterian Church with visitation to follow. Burial will be private in the church cemetery.
